PDF download is blank

Symptom

You click Download PDF and the resulting file is empty, has no content, or shows a broken layout.

Cause

  • The template has a broken merge field. A field like {{leaseholder.name}} no longer exists and the renderer fails silently.
  • The data is missing. The record has no line items, or the linked contact has no address.
  • The Gotenberg PDF service is temporarily unavailable.
  • Browser cached an old version. A force-refresh may fix it.

Fix

    1. Force-refresh the page (Ctrl+Shift+R or +Shift+R).
    2. Open the record and check every relevant field is filled.
    3. If the template is custom, open it and check for orphan merge fields.
    4. Try a different document on the same template — if that also fails, the template is the issue.
    5. Try again in a few minutes if the issue may be a temporary platform outage.

Prevent it next time

  • Test templates after editing by previewing against sample data.
  • Avoid removing data fields without checking which templates reference them.
